Forgive me if this is kind of a dumb question, but I tried googling and got some inconclusive answers...
I'm about to rip up some nasty carpet in my hallway, redo the baseboards and paint. There are two registers at the floor that look like this.
To me, that looks like a return cover because there's no damper on it. But there is an actual cold air return grille toward the ceiling and they feel like they're blowing out some air. Just not a ton.
The covers are 26x8 and the hole underneath is about 23x6. All I am finding in this size mostly is return grilles like this one
So do I just slap a new return grill over that and call it a day or find an actual baseboard register that fits the cutout? Does it even matter?
FYI, my house is about 1200 sq feet, built in 1960 and had a high efficiency furnace and new AC put in about 3 years ago. The house temperature in the summer and winter stays comfortable. So I don't want to screw that up.
