R/plumbing is pretty dead so I thought I'd try here. I'm in Victoria, BC, Canada if that helps.
I live in a condo complex with 2 buildings and our water main was found gushing water at 1:30 am Friday morning. The plumber left Friday afternoon by 4 and said they'd be back to turn on the water by 6pm on Saturday because it had to set.
Unless there's something I'm missing, there's no reason for it to be left that long after the repair is made. Everything I've seen indicates 4-12 hours to do the repair unless you're waiting on parts. This is the second time in less than 3 months that our water's been out for over 24 hours - the last problem seemed to have been in the other building because my partner and I did a walk around the property and nothing was dug up, but the plumbers were working in the other building. Assuming there's a shut off or each building, I suppose that it's possible the leak was before the building's shut off, but the main wasn't dug up which is weird in hindsight.
Another thing - they left a line uncapped (it looks like 3/4") which was streaming water this morning and has since stopped - I think it's connected to our timed sprinkler system. We've had very little rain in the last 3 months and it seems wrong to just leave the line disconnected like that.
Can anyone let me know if this is normal or not please?
