Painting Wood Grained Mini-fridge

Hi Folks, I have a mini-fridge in my office. It was left there by a previous resident, and is of unknown age. The door of the fridge had faux-wood grain, and the rest was painted brown to match. I got the idea that it would look better in red. I've done similar things in the past using engine block paint, so that's what I used here. I roughed up the paint with a mix of steel wool; 60, 100, and 240 grit sandpaper; and mineral spirits. There was moderate success on the sides and top, but I didn't sand all the way through to the metal on the door. The texture of the wood grain is coming through, and I'm not sure how to fix that. Do I need to take it back to the metal and start over? If so, how do I accomplish that with the least work?

Yes, I'm past the point of no return on this project. No, I wouldn't do it again if I had the chance. Please help.
