Adding a frame to a large mirror

I would like to relocate my master bath mirror (5ftx4ft) that is currently held in place with metal clips to our hallway. We have an old house and I wanted to build casing around the edge to make it fit the rest of the home accents. Some advice I received was rather than trying to build a frame strong enough to hold the mirror, cut the rabbet for the bottom trim piece and anchor it in place on the wall first. Then allow it to bear all the load and build the rest of the frame around it.

I wanted to run the idea past a larger crowd to see if this is crazy or genius since I couldn't find any other examples of someone taking this approach.
