Originally I had wanted to do my living room, most of downstairs, and then the stairway/upstairs hall with engineered wood, but as we get a lot of traffic, and I'd like to do the kitchen as well. My idea for the stair case would be to do this with a transition using the same material to the living room.
After some thought, tile might be better for general wear, cleanliness, can go into the kitchen, and cooler feeling (Texas here.) I've been looking at wood effect tiles, and think some of them actually look really quite nice. But, I have yet to find a tile that also included some sort of stairway piece/nosing. I've also heard that tiling can add significant weight to the stairs, but I wouldn't think that just doing the tops would be so bad.
Am I out of luck?
