I'm on mobile so I hope this comes out formatted right.
I have a leak in my roof that is causing a crack in the drywall seam in my living room ceiling.
It only leaks when there is an extended downpour and even then it is just a little drop that comes down. I went up in the attic last night while it was raining and didn't see any wet spots. Me and my father-in-law went up on the roof earlier this summer and noticed a bunch of nail heads holding the shingles on. We used clear silicone to cover every one we saw. We have noticed it leaking since then. What is the best way to go about finding the leak? Should I just let a garden hose run on the roof and hang out in the attic until I see something or would it be better to just call a roofer and let him take a look at it?
The roof was put on in 2007 by the homes previous owner and it had a 7 year warranty. No idea if it transferred or not but either way it's over 7 years.
Once the leak it sorted what would be the best course of action for the crack? Cut out the damaged portion and patch? It's about 18" long and and discolored about 2" around it.

Hi Tim! Maybe the hole in your roof is small, that it only leaks when there's an extended downpour. It’s too bad that the warranty has expired by now. It would’ve been easy to have it inspected, so your worries could be put to rest. Anyway, maybe you can find the source of the leak next time, and do something to plug that pesky leak. Or if you're really worried, you could call a roofer to have it checked, and maybe get some advice on how to deal with it. Good luck!
